This Is Not a Drill: The ‘Twilight’ Saga Is Coming to Netflix

The year is 2008 and you just got to the mall and began your trek to Hot Topic where you will make one of the hardest decisions of your life… Team Edward or Team Jacob? Fast forward 13 years later and it’s time to bring those t-shirts out of retirement because Netflix has officially announced that “Twilight” will be released to the platform this month.

The film series is based on the original novels written by Stephenie Meyer, which has since sold over 100 million copies. Twilight falls under the fantasy romance genre and is beloved by all ages. The series consists of several novels/films which are “Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” “Breaking Dawn” and most recently the novel “Midnight Sun.” The last film released was “Breaking Dawn: Part 2” and there doesn’t seem to be any plans for a “Midnight Sun” adaptation. The first film, ‘Twilight,’ was released in 2008 and the series has since gained major popularity for its heartthrobs Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Other than having attractive main characters, viewers enjoy watching for the fantastical nature and romantic storyline that consists of a love triangle between Edward, Jacob and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart).

It’s been a while, so let’s refresh. The films center around Bella’s life, in which she recently moved in with her father, Charlie Swan (Billy Burke), in Forks, Washington. She meets Edward shortly after when they become lab partners at school. It starts off rocky, but Edward’s obsession with Bella grows day by day and they soon become a couple. Unlike most people, Bella wasn’t turned off by Edward’s secret vampire life, instead she was fascinated and wanted to make the relationship work. Jacob isn’t too fond of the two coupling up, as his family are enemies of the Cullen’s. Thus begins the fight for Bella’s heart… and blood.

Each film is unique; there’s always some intense drama that goes down, such as vampire fights, thrill-seeking adventures and deathly situations. We get to watch Edward and Bella grow together and make some life-altering decisions, literally. With each film comes a new plot so the series never got tired with each film release. Even when viewers overwatch the films and are desperate for more, there’s tons of fanfiction on the internet for some extra fantasy and romance.

The “Twilight” saga was first available to stream on Amazon Prime in 2018 and then made its way over to Hulu in 2020, but fans have been dying for it to come to Netflix. One Twitter user wrote, “I just need these twilight movies on Netflix already.”

Now fans are taking to Twitter to express their gratitude following the good news of its release. One user wrote, “When twilight comes to Netflix this month a piece of my soul will be returned” and another wrote, “Everyone shut up the twilight saga is gonna be back on netflix next week no one disturb me i’ll be busy,” which got over 2,000 likes. It’s safe to say we’re all anticipating the series’ arrival.

“Twilight” gives long-time fans a piece of nostalgia. It’s one of those film series that you want to watch regardless of how old you get or how cheesy it is. Some TikTok users recently humored us with some Bella satire, mocking her awkwardness throughout the film, but despite that, the films continue to gain significant popularity because you just can’t help but find the characters lovable and the storyline interesting.

“The Twilight Saga” will be available to stream on Netflix beginning July 16.
