What to Expect in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 3

*Warning this article contains spoilers of the season two finale of “Only Murders in the Building”*

A new murder is upon us with Hulu’s hit show “Only Murders in the Building” soon returning for season three. And what better way to watch a true crime story than with the iconic podcast trio Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin) solving the murder?

The series follows Arconia residents Mabel, Oliver and Charles, who start a true crime podcast together after discovering they are all obsessed with listening to the same murder-mystery podcast, “All is Not OK in Oklahoma.” Surprisingly, their love for true crime becomes real life when mysterious murders occur in their building. The trio, without hesitation, start solving these cases and record their discoveries on their podcast, “Only Murders in the Building.”

This time, the trio is solving a murder outside of the Arconia. Here is everything there is to know about “Only Murders in the Building” season three:

1.  What will the new season be about?

Hulu has given little information about what the new season will entail. Though, based on the last season and the teased trailer, fans can expect this season to pick up right where the show left off.

In the final episode of season two, the series had a one-year time jump toward the end of the episode where everything seemed to go back to normal for Mabel, Oliver and Charles after solving Bunny’s (Jayne Houdyshell) murder. Oliver was debuting his own Broadway show, and Charles returned to acting by performing in Oliver’s play. During opening night, the performance took an unexpected turn when a new character Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), Charles’ Broadway co-star, shockingly collapsed to his death in front of the audience. The new season will follow this plotline where Mabel, Oliver and Charles try to solve Ben’s murder. Fans can also anticipate seeing flashbacks before opening night, based on the teased trailer, which showed a glimpse of what appears to be a table reading of the Broadway cast.

2. Who will be in the new season?

Of course, the famous trio Gomez, Martin and Short will return in the new season, along with Paul Rudd. Other characters of the show have yet to be confirmed. However, in a shared message with Martin, Short and Gomez, they teased that all the favorite characters will return for season three. So, most likely, fans will see characters like Detective Donna Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), Oliver’s son Will (Ryan Broussard), Arconia resident Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) and podcaster Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) return in this new season.

Alongside the beloved cast, new members will be added to this season and from the looks of it, these new additions are better than ever. In January, Gomez and Martin revealed that 21-time Academy Award nominee and three-time award winner Meryl Streep is joining the cast. Although her character remains unknown, the teased trailer hinted she might play a Broadway actor. Also joining the cast is “Emily in Paris” star Ashley Park who will be playing a young Broadway actress. In addition to the former, “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams will be playing a documentarian who develops an interest in the trio, according to Collider.

3. Will there be a fourth season?

Season four has not yet been confirmed. However, the co-creator of the series, John Hoffman, told The Hollywood Reporter that although he does not have a “five-season plan” for the series, he is excited to keep the show going for as long as Hulu will let him.

“I think there’s a great variety [in terms of the stories that can be told],” Hoffman told The Hollywood Reporter. “I know there have been funny discussions about how many murders can there be in one building, but I think that’s a fun challenge.”

According to Variety, Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, spoke highly of the show.

“‘Only Murders in the Building’ is the true crown jewel of our slate,” said Erwich.… “We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story.”

Based on the looks of it, fans of “Only Murders in the Building” should not fret. It seems the third season won’t be the last.

4. When is the release date?

Hulu has yet to confirm when the third season will be released, mainly because the series started production in January. However, the first season debuted in August, and the second one in June. The new season will likely be released in the late summer.

As viewers wait for the third season, “Only Murders in the Building” seasons one and two are available on Hulu.
