Everything There Is To Know About ‘Scream VI’

*Spoiler warning: this article contains spoilers for the 2022 “Scream” movie.

What is your favorite scary movie? If it is “Scream” you are in for a treat because directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the 2022 film “Scream” are bringing another sequel to the franchise.

The last movie ended with a new generation of teens including Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), her half-sister Tara (Jenna Ortega), Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) and his twin sister Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) surviving their first Ghostface killings with the help from original characters Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette).

The characters might have thought they escaped Ghostface once and for all, but a new Ghostface killer has arisen and this villain is primed for revenge. As Dewey said, “they always come back.”

Here is everything there is to know about “Scream VI”:

1. Where will the film take place?

According to “Scream” star Barrera, the upcoming installment will occur in New York City.

This is not the first time that the writers set the film outside of Woodsboro. For instance, “Scream 2” occurred on a college campus, and “Scream 3” took place in Hollywood. However, Barrera told Collider that the new location is 20 times more mortifying since everyone in New York City is doing their own thing and unwilling to help when Ghostface attacks.

2. Who will be returning?

The Ghostface survivors of the 2022 “Scream” cast are returning for the sequel. This includes stars Barrera, Ortega, Gooding and Brown. Fans can also expect to see previous “Scream” stars Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere, who are reprising their roles as Gal and Kirby Reed respectively.

Viewers will also get to see new cast members such as Dermot Mulroney, Tony Revolori, Samara Weaving, Devyn Nekoda and Liana Liberato.

However, Campbell, who plays Sidney confirmed to Deadline that she will not be returning because of the “Scream VI” offer not “equating to the value” she brought to the franchise.

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” said Campbell in a statement to Deadline. “To all my ‘Scream’ fans, I love you.”

3. What is the movie about?

Paramount Pictures and the “Scream VI” cast have been vague about what the film entails. The only confirmed detail about the plotline is that the four survivors of the last Ghostface killing move to New York City for a fresh new start. This means there are endless possibilities for what the movie could be about. But “Scream VI” star Jenna Ortega, who plays Tara, told Entertainment Tonight that the new installment is the most aggressive and violent yet.

Fans got to see a glimpse of this violence in the recent trailer where the new Ghostface attacks their victims in public spaces. For instance, the preview teased Ghostface chasing characters Sam and Tara in a convenience store and another scene where the four survivors are in a crowded subway with the killer. Usually, Ghostface never terrorizes their victims in public, so viewers can expect the film to be different in that regard.

4. How long will the film be?

According to Regal Cinema, the movie will be two hours and three minutes long, making it the longest “Scream” movie yet. Compared to other “Scream” movies, the film is an extra three to 12 minutes depending on which film you compare it to. For instance, the original “Scream” was one hour and 51 minutes, and “Scream 2” was two hours.

This may raise concern for some fans that the movie might drag on. But with the film’s newly added elements of location, Ghostface and Kirby, the extra time might be necessary for “Scream VI” to blossom.

5. When is the release date?

“Scream VI” was originally scheduled to release in theaters on March 31, but Paramount Pictures announced in November of last year that they were changing the release date. The film will now be in theaters on March 10. In the meantime, viewers can watch the “Scream” saga on Paramount+.
